America is increasing their consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup.  On average Americans consume over 60 pounds per person per year. The highest consumption is from sugar, sweetened drinks and processed foods. During that time period, obesity rates have more than tripled and diabetes incidence has increased more than seven times. Fructose and overall increased refined carbohydrates are a major part of these problems.

The favorable cost and taste has influenced America to consume massive amounts of this sweetener and the fat around the midline is a tale-tell sign.  Evidence points that heart disease, obesity, dementia, liver failure, tooth decay and many more named and blamed conditions are increasing under HFCS consumption.

 We are being misinformed by the corn industry that it is safe and they refer to it as Natural Corn Sugar.  The ads are stating the body cannot tell the difference betweem cane and corn sugar.  They further state that eating it makes us feel better.  Physicians have been targeted too with a twelve page monograph from the Corn Refiners Association reviewing the science that HFCS is safe and no different than cane sugar. This simply is not true.

  •  “Sugar in any form causes obesity and disease when consumed in pharmacologic doses.  Cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup are indeed both harmful when consumed in pharmacologic doses of 140 pounds per person per year. When one 20 ounce HFCS sweetened soda, sports drink, or tea has 17 teaspoons of sugar (and the average teenager often consumes two drinks a day) we are conducting a largely uncontrolled experiment.

  • HFCS and cane sugar are NOT biochemically identical or processed the same way by the body. High fructose corn syrup is an industrial food product and far from “natural” or a naturally occurring substance.

  • HFCS contains contaminants including mercury that are not regulated or measured by the FDA.
